I Saw The Angel In The Marble....

"I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free..."
Michelangelo Buonarroti
This pointillist picture took over 50 hours. It was a work of passion as I watched the angel I imagined emerging from the paper, each dot coaxing him out.  There are many layers with different sized nibs. I enjoy imagining and drawing angels.  I have tried to create the illusion that the angel is bathed in light from above as he lays, perhaps resting or dreaming.

Jimmy

I have loved James Dean for as long as I can remember.  Its funny how someone that died in 1955 can impact the lives of people that werent even alive at the time of his untimely death.
The first face I ever dotted was James Dean and I have since drawn and dotted him many times.  This new image is not as iconic as some of James Dean but I love the gentleness of his features in it.

This picture was completed with 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 nibs.

I am lucky to have been able to indulge my love for James Dean in my travels .  I first went to the Griffith Observatory where James Dean filmed Rebel Without A Cause in LA.

I have walked down the "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" in New York and even went to the place James Dean died.  The intersection has a sign and the Jack Ranch, where his body was taken has a memorial built by a Japanese fan.  I found the road so sad and desolate, filled with the feeling of tragedy and unfulfilled possibilities.

River.....

This picture is a little sentimental because I was a big fan of River Phoenix.  I have drawn River a few times over the years but this is the first pointillist picture of him.  The picture is of Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix most likely a shot from My Own Private Idaho.
This picture was done with 0.4 and 0.1 nibs only.

Love Is Knowledge

The next choice of image for the sketchbook project represents my passion for knowledge.  I have collected autographs since I was a child and when I was young the cinematographer Vittorio Storaro answered one of my fan letters.  He didnt just send me his autograph but he sent me a poem written in Italian but which translates as the following:
The light is word
The word is love,
Love is knowledge
Knowledge is freedom
Freedom is light
Light is power
Power is all.
I love the power this poem imbues knowledge with.  I recently heard the story about Albert Einstein and the simple bus ride he took which inspired his understanding of relativity.  Astonishing!!
This picture was done in purple using 0.2 and 0.4 size nibs.
