I have wanted to enter the Western Australian Black Swan Art Prize for a few years but initially I struggled finding a famous Western Australian for the portrait. I then went to Canada for seven months.  I was determined this year to enter.

Karl Langdon is a leading sports commentator and radio personality in Western Australia  and a former Australian Rules Footballer with the Subiaco Football Club and the West Coast Eagles.

I wanted the portrait to have Karl looking towards the sun, the light reflecting off his face. We met and initially I took a set of photographs as pointillism is very time consuming and he couldn't sit in a traditional sense for the portrait.

The portrait has taken six months to complete as its much larger than my usual works.  I used artline markers black, brown, orange and yellow all 0.2 sized nibs.

It's been a monumental task but I have enjoyed creating this portrait.  Wish me luck !

My latest pointillist picture is of a Russian musician in a band called Six Pages Back.  The hardest part of this picture was the fact that the subject, Vitaly, is quite pale which means the dots had to be very delicately applied. I used 0.1 and 0.3 art line markers on this piece.  Check this band out they are great !

Today I completed my pointillism picture of Jimi Hendrix. This picture has taken me awhile as I have travelled a lot in the last year or so.  I chose Jimi Hendrix for my latest picture after a friend suggested he would be an interesting subject.  As always with any picture I do I watched lots of live video of Jimi performing as well as documentaries on how this fascinating man lived his too short life.  The hardest part of this picture was Jimi's hair!

Album Art and other Adventures

Well its not pointillism but I had the opportunity to do some album art for woodrowgerber and enjoyed the experience so much! I am an avid photography and I just love "playing" with my images using filters and textures. What fun!!
I did a few different designs but the one that was used for the album was a photograph I took on my travels in California, which is fitting as woodrowgerber is LA based. The music inspired the cover.  Its a great album called XO and available on iTunes :)

Marc Bolan

My latest pointillist picture was completed using Artline Drawing System Markers 0.1 and 0.3 on textured paper.  The subject is Marc Bolan.  A fascinating man and performer, his TV show Marc has just been uploaded to YouTube. This creative musician, like so many was taken too early, dying in a tragic car accident.  One can only wonder at what he may have achieved and delight in what he did ! I loved this image with his tophat on.  The most difficult part of this picture was his amazing hair :)

The Yielding

This picture was done to accompany a story I wrote for the Brooklyn Library Sketchbook Project.  Its a dark fantasy story and this image was perfect.  It was completed with 0,1 and 0.3 Artline system markers. The biggest challenge with this picture was the hands.
